Profile

Sir Frank Holmes is an Emeritus Professor of VUW, having been the Macarthy Professor of Economics (1959-67), Professor of Money and Finance (1970-77) and Visiting Professor of Public Policy (1982-84). He was a foundation member of the IPS board and its chairman from 1988 to 1991. He has played a leading role in the work of IPS on New Zealand's external relations. He is the author or co-author of several of its publications on relations with Australia, North America, Asia and Europe. Recent publications build on his previous experience as a company director and earlier research on New Zealand's financial system. He completed the third volume of a history of the National Bank of New Zealand in 2003.He was one of a group led by John Singleton who collaborated in writing a history of the Reserve Bank from 1973 to 1982, published in 2006,

Outside the University, Sir Frank was chairman of a number of advisory councils, including the Monetary and Economic Council, the New Zealand Planning Council, the New Zealand Council for Educational Research, the Advisory Council on Educational Planning and the Asia 2000 Foundation. Between 1982 and 1995, he was a director of the National Bank of New Zealand and Lloyds Bank NZA, and chairman of the Norwich Union Group in New Zealand (Including State Insurance) and of South Pacific Merchant Finance. He currently chairs the Hugo Group, a strategic planning consultancy.

He was elected a Distinguished Fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Directors in 1999 and a Distinguished Fellow of the New Zealand Association of Economists in 2004. He is also a Fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Management. He received the NZIER-Qantas award for excellence in economics in 1995. Sir Frank was knighted for his services to economics and education in 1975.
