Profile

Colin James is a political journalist of more than 35 years experience
who writes weekly columns in the Dominion Post, Press, Otago Daily
Times and Waikato Times and a monthly column in Management magazine. He
is the New Zealand correspondent of Oxford Analytica.

He specialises in party and electoral politics. He has correctly
forecast which party would lead the government in 13 of the past 14
elections. He has written six books on politics and policy, including
The Quiet Revolution (1986) and New Territory (1992) and three on
elections, and chapters in numerous books, including academic texts.

He also specialises in analysing and forecasting the policy environment
in which businesses and other organisations must operate and runs a
forecasting service, the Hugo Group, which has more than 80 medium and
large corporate members at CEO level.

His most recent booklet for the IPS, co-authored with Christina Hood
(2006) , deals with energy sustainability. A booklet in 2002) dealt
with the relationship between ministers and departmental CEOs. In April
2000 he organised a national conference on the constitution.

He has contributed papers to academic seminars in New Zealand,
Australia, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States. He has held
several university fellowships. He was made an honorary doctor of
literature at Victoria University in 2008 and is a fellow of the
Institute of Public Administration and a life member of the Engineers
Union and the Parliamentary Press Gallery.
