Towards a Restorative Society Symposium: 10 - 11 October 2005
This symposium brought together people with a knowledge of and an interest in restorative practices in a variety of different fields and was an important event for the IPS. It was initiated by Senior Associate Gabrielle Maxwell. As a cross disciplinary event of its kind it attracted key stakeholders in New Zealand (and some from overseas), and many participants regarded it as the first of an essential series. Work is currently underway to turn the papers from the symposium into an IPS publication. Please click here to view the proceedings and papers presented.

The Visible Hand Book Launch: 25 October 2005
The Visible Hand: The changing role of the state in New Zealand’s development (edited by John Martin and Andrew Ladley) was launched by Dr Alan Bollard, Governor General of the Reserve Bank on Tuesday 25 October. This publication marks the follow up to the November 2004 symposium held in honour of Sir Frank Holmes. Many of his former colleagues attended the launch, highlighting the high esteem in which the business, government and academic community holds Sir Frank. The book is available here for purchase.

The New Government Arrangements Panel Discussion: 31 October 2005
This panel discussion entitled The New Government Arrangements: Constitutional Outrage or Kiwi Pragmatic Innovation? was hosted by the IPS. Interesting discussion followed talks by Dr Andrew Ladley, Dr Jonathan Boston and Nicola White.

Seminar: 14 April 2005
An address by the Philippines National Secretary of Defence Hon Avelino Cruz, “The Philippines perspective on Regional Security, including the peace process in Mindanao, terrorism in Southeast Asia and the role of China and the USA in the region”

Workshop: 5 April 2005
Hosted PNG Select Committee Workshop "Wansolwarra" (One salt water) and luncheon, topics discussed were Models of Economic Collaboration, Common Currency, Trade Flows, Labour and movement of people, the Role of Shared values. Alastair Bisley chaired the workshop and presenters were Dr Arthur Grimes, Dr Brent Layton, Dr Maryanne Thompson, Alan Williams, Leith Comer, and Andrew Ladley.

Seminar: 31 March 2005
Co-hosted an address and luncheon with Mr Jaap de Hoop Scheffer NATO Secretary General, with the NZ Institute of International Affairs. The Title of the address was “NATO and New Zealand Common Security Interests in a changing World”. The address was well attended and prompted some interesting questions and comments from the audience, which the Secretary General discussed openly.

Seminar: 14 March 2005
Co-hosted and address by Hon Kjell Mange Bondevik, Prime Minster of Norway, with the Institute of International Affairs. The subject was "Norwegian Conflict Resolution - 100 Years of Foreign Policy". The address was well received by the audience.

Roundtable: 15 February 2005
A round table discussion was held with Mr Noel Pearson, The Australian Newspaper’s Australian of the Year for 2005. Mr Pearson Heads the Cape York Institute for Policy and Leadership. He has been a force in Aboriginal Affairs for 15years and has contributed to the debate about the future direction of Australia’s Indigenous people

Seminar: 14 February 2005
The Institute hosted an address by Hon Goran Persson Prime Minster of Sweden titled, “Economic and Social Policy: The Swedish Way”. This was an interesting and engaging address, which was well attended
