Performance-Based Research Fund Book Launch
The IPS's new publication, Evaluating the Performance-Based Research Fund: Framing the Debate (edited by Leon Bakker, Jonathan Boston, Lesley Campbell and Roger Smyth) was officially launched on Thursday 14 September. The book is based on the February 2006 PBRF symposium co-hosted by the IPS, the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) and the Ministry of Education. This launch attracted a large audience including Professor Roy Sharp (Vice Chancellor of Canterbury University ), Professor Tim Beaglehole (Chancellor), Professor Pat Walsh (VC) and Dr Colin Webb (Deputy Chief Executive of the TEC). Professor Jonathan Boston, Kaye Turner (Deputy Chair of the TEC) and Professor Neil Quigley (DVC Research) spoke. Neil thanked Jonathan Boston and the TEC for their hard work in designing and administering the revised PBRF system. He particularly highlighted the importance of the PBRF as a funding instrument and its impact on research management in tertiary institutions. At Victoria University alone around 200 staff were involved in the implementation of the 2006 assessment, with nearly 500 evidence portfolios submitted to the TEC. Copies of the book are available for purchase from the IPS at a cost of $39.90.
