Inter-disciplinary Workshop on Ethnic Identity, Identification and Change

In March 2010 this workshop was jointly hosted by the Institute of Policy Studies and the Population Studies Centre at Waikato University. The aim of the forum was to share ideas about processes of ethnic identity construction, identification and change, in order to enhance the usage of ethnic data by policy makers and analysts.

The workshop was based around six papers. These were:

  • Emily Keddell, Otago University, Joint action: Constituting Identities Between the Survey and the Person
  • Brendan Stevenson, Massey University, Measuring Maori Cultural Identity
  • Melinda Webber, University of Auckland, Racial-Ethnic Identity: What Informs Adolescents’ Self-Identifications?
  • Paul Brown, Statistics New Zealand, Inter-ethnic mobility in the New Zealand Census
  • Kristie Carter, Wellington School of Medicine, How much and for whom does self-identified ethnicity change over time in New Zealand? Results from a longitudinal survey
  • Ralf Engler, Ministry of Education, Reporting ethnicity using never-, ever- and sole-ethnic group categories
