Engaging with New Zealand> Tell us what you think: Long-term Benefit Dependency: the issues

On Monday 9 August 2010, the Welfare Working Group published a discussion document on the issues in the current benefit system.

This discussion paper was informed by 27 workshops from Kaitaia to Westport, involving people with personal experience of the benefit system, as well as the providers and agencies who work in the social services sector.

The Working Group also hosted a two-day Forum in June involving more than 250 local and international experts, and representatives of Tangata Whenua, business, the community and voluntary sector, and minority groups.

The Welfare Working Group is committed to making sure the New Zealand public are able to easily make submissions on the issues raised in the discussion document. That has to be balanced with the amount of time that the Welfare Working Group has available. The Welfare Working Group is expected to provide its final recommendations to Government in December 2010.

We are looking for your feedback on the issues raised. Submissions can be made online or by hardcopy by Friday 17 September.

The feedback on this paper will inform the next stage of the Welfare Working Group's work programme an options paper that will also be put out for public submission later this year. The Welfare Working Group is expected to provide its final recommendations to Government in December 2010.

The Welfare Working Group has asked questions throughout the detailed document. These questions are listed below. We are interested in your response to these questions.
